Welcome to Migrant Education Region V!
Migrant Education Region V provides leadership, staff development and other services to districts and families to ensure that migrant students succeed in the basic curriculum. Migrant instructional services are delivered to eligible migrant students through school in a variety of instructional programs through various extended day settings: after school instruction, Saturday schools, home tutorial programs and summer school. Most extended day programs operate 3-5 days per week at participating school sites in Kern County.
Hidden Treasures!: Summer Programs at Edison & Di Giorgio School District Cluster Sites Summer Programs:

The Migrant
Education Program has had the wonderful opportunity to
provide migrant services to the Edison and Di Giorgio area for
almost 8 years. Over this time, the Migrant Education Program has
come to realize that these cluster sites have come to be our “hidden
treasures.” These two school districts are relatively small, but the
support and commitment from administration, staff, students, and
parents has been incredible throughout the last decade.
This summer was no different. With the help of administration, staff,
and parents the Migrant Education Program was able to provide a four
weeks summer program at Orangewood Elementary, which is
part of the Edison School District.
The program started the first week of June and concluded on
June 29, 2007. During this time, over 60 at-risk migrant students
(from K-8) were provided migrant supplemental services. Migrant
teachers provided students with extensive help in math, reading, and
writing. Even though students and teachers worked very hard
during the summer program, there were several days where they
were visited by local artists through the “Artist in Residence
Program” and given the opportunity to work on art lessons. Also,
author, Matthew Gollub paid the children a visit and explained to
students and parents the importance of reading at an early age. At the
end of his presentations, students walked away with autographed
books that were written by Mr. Gollub. The summer program at
Orangewood Elementary was a great success largely in part to the
hard work and dedication provided by our migrant teachers and Mr.
Holmes who was the principal during the four week period.
In addition to the program at Orangewood, Migrant Education
Region V also provided summer services to students in the Di
Giorgio area. Unlike other programs held on school sites,
the Di Giorgio program is possible through the gracious loan of
the recreational center by the trailer park owner. The
program ran from June 18 to July 19, 2007 and served over 50
students ranging from 3 to 12 years of age and provided support
with early childhood activities, kinder readiness and
reading, writing and math. The hardest part was getting every student
to class. However, with transportation help, students were able
to get to class on a daily basis. Many students showed tremendous
growth at the end of the program and as a culminating event
tutors and parents celebrated with an impromptu
potluck.
